Stand at the edge of your space, drawing in a breath before saying.

I plant the hedge where worlds collide,
Between the living and the spirit's tide.
With thorn and root, with bark and bone,
Beyond this hedge, no spirit shall roam.

Extend the index and middle finger on your dominant hand  and, with deliberate motions, draw the outline of a hedge, imagining thorns and vines growing and twisting as a wall around your ritual space. Imagine this boundary creating a wall of protection and a gateway for spirit communication. As you trace, feel the energy of the hedge being planted into the earth or the space around you.

Once you have planted the hedge, it is time to walk it. This is done to call the spirits you wish to communicate with to you, as you might call a neighbor to your fence. Begin by walking slowly around the edge of the space, crossing the boundaries of the hedge you’ve just planted. Feel the boundary between the mundane world and the spirit realm as you walk the perimeter. As you walk, you may repeat the following:

I walk the hedge, where worlds do meet,
Between the living and the spirits' feet.
In this place, no harm shall tread,
The boundary set, the spirit's thread.

I call to those who walk the night,
Who dwell in shadows, out of sight.
Come, kindly spirits, heed my call,
Step from the dark and one and all.

I walk the hedge, I cross the veil,
Through thorn and root, I weave my tale.
Spirits of air, earth, fire, and sea,
Come now, commune and speak with me.

If you wish to use the hedge as a portal for spirit travel, stop at any point within the hedge and focus your intention. You may wish to light a candle or ring a bell to signify your intent to enter the spirit world.

Through the hedge, I now do pass,
Between the worlds, through looking glass
Kind spirits near, I call you forth,
Guide my steps, from south to north.
