Casting a Circle for Spirit-Summoning
Most practitioners of magic are familiar with the idea of Casting a Circle as used in Wicca and its practices, where a Circle is to delineate a workspace and to collect/contain any raised power. In this case, the Circle is created as a space in which to summon a spirit; the practitioner will not stand within the Circle and it will not contain power. Stand outside the area where you intend to cast the Circle. With the index and middle finger of your dominant hand, begin to draw the Circleβs boundary on the ground. The boundary is drawn three time: once clockwise to claim the space within the Circle, one counterclockwise to banish any unwanted influences, and once more clockwise to officially cast the Circle. As you draw the circle, recite:
I cast this circle on the ground,
A hallowed space where spirit is bound.
Only the one I call may tread,
To answer what Iβve sought and said.
To call the spirit into the Circle, stand before the Circle, holding your hand raised high. Focus your entirely on the spirit you wish to summon. In a clear and steady voice, say:
Spirit of (name of the spirit or entity),
I call to you in the dark of night.
Enter this circle, come into sight,
Be with me now, on this sacred rite.
If the spiritβs name is unknown, simply say:
Spirit of the unseen, the silent and true,
I summon thee, come forth, I beseech you.
