This is the ritual structure I use for full rituals, such as seasonal rites or group ceremonies. While some practitioners may prefer to perform all their workings within a formal ritual framework, it is not a requirementβ€”ritual elements may be condensed or removed entirely according to personal preference and the nature of the working.

Below is the outline of my ritual structure, designed to create a focused, liminal space for different types of magical and spiritual work.

Formal Ritual Structure

Preparation

  • Preparing the Body – Any steps you take to ensure that your body is cleansed, protected, and adorned for ritual; this helps in marking the transition from the mundane to the magical.

  • Witch’s Walk – A ritual journey performed when traveling to the ritual site, intended to align the practitioner’s mindset to the working ahead.

Opening the Ritual

  • Offerings to the Spirits of the Area – Acknowledging and honoring the spirits of the land on which you are working and asking for their permission to use their space.

  • Greeting the Spirits – Calling upon any spirits you wish guide and witness the rite. These may include:

    • Greeting the Initiators – Spirits who guide your journey as a witch, who serve as guides and mentors.

    • Greeting the Guardians – Spirits who play a role in both guiding and protecting you on your journey.

    • Greeting the Familiars – Personal spirit collaborators who aid in magical work.

    • Greeting the Allies – Collective animal, plant, weather, or concept spirits that offer their power and support.

    • Greeting the Ancestors – Honoring those who came before, whose wisdom and presence guide you.

Setting Up the Space

  • Crossroads Rite – Establishing a liminal space, creating a meeting ground between the worlds.

  • Establishing Ritual Space: Creating ritual space to suit the purpose of your working. Please note that these elements are generally not all done in the same space; rather they are chosen based on the purpose of the ritual.

    • Laying the Compass – A technique used for spirit travel, marking out the ritual space in alignment with unseen forces.

    • Planting the Hedge – Preparing for communion with the spirits and the spirit world.

    • Casting a Circle – Creating a boundary for spiritual work and spirit interaction; unlike the Circle associated with Wiccan magical practice, this is a space into which a spirit is summoned.

Power Focusing & Raising

  • Expression of Intention – A spoken declaration of the purpose of the rite, aligning will and action.

  • Power Raising Methods – Energy is gathered and directed toward the working. Various techniques may be used:

    • Treading the Mill – A movement-based practice used to enter trance, raise power, and shift consciousness.

    • Fire & Wind Chant – A rhythmic chant that can be used to induce altered states of mind or raise power for magic.

    • Drumming Rite – The rhythmic use of instruments, dancing, and chant to stimulate trance and raise power.

    • The Witches’ Dance – Physical activity to awaken energy within the body and space.

Working

  • The central magical or spiritual action of the ritual, whether it be a spell, spirit communion, or seasonal rite. Examples of workings may include: any spells or magic to be performed, ceremonial activities such as the observance of seasonal milestones or life events, initiations and dedications, divination, spirit communication, and the ritual creation of tools and supplies.

Closing Down the Space

  • Undoing the Compass – Releasing the pathways created for spirit travel.

  • Undoing the Hedge – Closing off spirit communion and withdrawing from the unseen world.

  • Closing a Circle – Dismissing any spirits summoned and sealing the ritual space.

  • Uncrossing the Roads – Closing the liminal crossroads to restore balance.

Thanking the Spirits

  • Dismissing Guides, Allies, Familiars & Guardians: Expressing gratitude to the spirits who were present and assisted in the work.

  • Paying the Place Spirits – Offering a final gift of thanks, ensuring a balanced exchange.

Condensed Ritual Structure

This simplified ritual framework retains the essential elements of ritual space creation, power raising, magical working, and closing, without preparation elements or the invocation and dismissal of specific spirit categories.

Opening the Ritual

  • Offerings to the Spirits of the Area – Acknowledging and honoring the spirits of the land, ensuring respect and harmony.

  • Crossroads Rite – Opening a liminal space, bridging the mundane and spirit worlds.

  • Establishing Ritual Space – Creating a space suited to the ritual’s purpose:

    • Laying the Compass – Aligning the ritual space with unseen forces.

    • Planting the Hedge – Preparing for spirit communion.

    • Casting a Circle – Creating a boundary for spiritual work and spirit interaction.

Power Focusing & Raising

Invocation of Intention – Declaring the purpose of the ritual, aligning will and action. If you are working alone or have clearly established this prior to a group working, it can be omitted or done in silence.

Raising Methods – Energy is gathered and directed toward the working:

  • Treading the Mill – Trance-inducing movement to raise power.

  • Fire & Wind Chant – Rhythmic chanting to shift consciousness and build energy.

  • Drumming Rite – Percussion-driven trance and power-raising.

  • The Witches’ Dance – Ecstatic movement to awaken energy.

Working

The core magical or spiritual action.

Closing the Ritual

Releasing the Ritual Space – Closing liminal pathways and sealing energy:

  • Uncrossing the Roads – Closing the crossroads and restoring balance.

  • Undoing the Compass – Releasing the pathways used for spirit travel.

  • Undoing the Hedge – Withdrawing from spirit communion.

  • Closing a Circle – Sealing the ritual space.

Paying the Place Spirits – Offering a final gift of thanks, ensuring a balanced exchange.
